Nomination Procedure For London 2012!

Athletics Canada announces internal nomination procedure for

 London 2012 Paralympics

The qualifying window to record performances under the selection criteria opened January 1, and will close June 30, 2012 coinciding with the end of the 2012 Paralympic Track & Field Trials in Calgary, Alta.  The Paralympic Track & Field Trials will serve as the selection trials for all events except the marathon.  Due to the unique physical demands of the marathon event, performances achieved in 2011 will be considered.

The team size quota, as determined by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) is not yet known, as such, should team size quota not be filled as of June 30, an extended qualifying period will be granted from July 1 to 15, 2012.

The Basics

Staged in the brand new Olympic Stadium, the track events will be held over distances ranging from 100m to 5000m. Track events may begin with heats, with the best athletes eventually qualifying for the finals.

The field events broadly fall into two categories. The list of throwing events includes Discus, Javelin, Shot Put and Club Throw, while the programme of jumping events includes High Jump, Long Jump and Triple Jump.
The men’s and women’s Marathons will be held on the streets of central London on the 9 September, and will be straight finals.

As well as having the largest number of events and athletes at the Games, Athletics also has the largest number of classes. Each athlete is given a two-digit number: the first digit indicates the nature of the athlete’s impairment while the second indicates the amount of functional ability the athlete has. The lower the number, the greater the impact that the athlete’s impairment has on his or her ability to compete.
  • Classes 11-13 are for athletes with visual impairment.
  • Class 20 is for athletes with an intellectual impairment.
  • Classes 31-38 are for athletes with Cerebral Palsy, with classes 31 to 34 using a wheelchair to compete.
  • Classes 40-46 are for athletes with a loss of limb or limb deficiency.
  • Classes 51-58 cover wheelchair racers or field athletes who throw from a seated position.

PETRO CANADA for the FACE Grant!

This grant in 2011 definitely helped towards making the year possible.  Thank you!!

The Fuelling Athlete and Coaching Excellence (FACE) program focuses on providing equal funding to developing Olympic and Paralympic athletes and their coaches.
FACE helps to provide the athlete and their coach with the resources necessary to close the gap and achieve national carded status for the athlete in the short-term, and improve coaching skills over the long-term.
In cooperation with our partners, the FACE program identifies 50 athlete and coach pairings to provide funding grants of $8,000 for each athlete and coach team. All Olympic and Paralympic sports are eligible for FACE funding and follow the Sport Canada review process to qualify.

Getting ready for 2012 !
